Becky W. Evans is a Boston-based writer, editor and educator with a background in environmental journalism and higher education. She enjoys mentoring young writers and helping them uncover their unique voice and story.
As a Staff Writer for The Standard Times of New Bedford, Becky won regional journalism awards for her reporting on the “three beats” of commercial fishing, immigration, and environment. Chasing these interwoven stories brought Becky aboard an 80-foot fishing trawler in Georges Bank to observe the impacts of federal groundfishing rules on beleaguered fishermen and depleted cod and haddock stocks; hiking through Guatemala’s highland villages to interview garment factory workers deported during a botched US federal immigration raid ordered by the George W. Bush administration; and scouring public records to uncover the environmental and public health legacy of electrical capacitor manufacturers’ PCB contamination of New Bedford’s residential and aquatic neighborhoods.
Becky brought her passion for writing and reporting to Lasell College and Boston University College of Communication, where she taught undergraduate and graduate courses in human communication, communication writing, ESOL writing, resume and cover letter writing, and photojournalism to both domestic and international students.
As a food justice educator with the Boston Young Adult Volunteer Program, Becky designed a regional foodshed curriculum incorporating place-based, experiential education field trips and a local-food SNAP challenge. As a program leader with The Eco-Stewards Program, she mentored young adults in multimedia and narrative storytelling focused on the intersection of faith and environmental justice. As an independent educator, she taught ESOL classes to adult immigrants in Waltham, Cambridge, and New Bedford; and maple sugaring and typewriter art to primary school students in Somerville and Cambridge (both in-person and online).
Becky holds degrees from Colgate University (BA in English & Environmental Economics), Boston University College of Communication (MS in Print Journalism) and Boston University School of Education (MA in Higher Education TESOL). Her writing has appeared in The Standard-Times, The Cape-Cod Times, The Boston Herald, The Worcester Telegram, The Atlanta-Journal Constitution, The Austin American-Statesman, The Dayton Daily News, National Fisherman Magazine, Boston Magazine, Inc. Magazine, and Harvard Business School Publishing case studies.
